If things are not going so great at work or home, consider taking a quick reprieve and traveling for a few days. It does not have to be an exotic location: just a few days “away,” no matter how many miles away from home, can help refresh your mind and spirit. Read this article before you plan your travel to get some helpful hints.

If you are traveling to an area that has a liquid-restriction on all liquids you might be packing, invest in bar shampoos and tooth powder. Believe it or not, you can actually find bar shampoo and toothpaste available in powder form online. These items are a great way to get around liquid-restrictions.

Don’t judge a hotel by its name alone. Look for the year it was built or last renovated, which can be very telling. Hotels can take a beating and a newly built budget hotel, may be much nicer than a luxury brand that is showing a lot of wear and tear from not being renovated in years.

Long driving trips can be fun and economical, but the cost of stopping for meals every few hours will add up, especially for a family. If you are planning a longish car trip, make sure you have plenty of car food available in advance. You may be able to get away with skipping the hourlong lunch stop, which will not only save you money, but will get you to your destination sooner. If you have a second adult in the car, that person can serve as “lunchmaker,” handing around sandwiches, cutting fruit, and making sure everybody gets their midday meal on the road.

When traveling by air in the U.S. you can get through security faster if you wear slip-on shoes. Since you have to remove your shoes when going through security it is better to have shoes that come off and go on quickly so you can retrieve your other belongings quickly.

If you’re going on a road trip but don’t have space to keep a cooler, there’s a simple way to make sure you have ice cold water on you trip! The night before you leave, fill some water bottles (but not all the way to the top!) and put them in the freezer over night. Take them on the trip with you the next day and they’ll slowly melt over the course of the day, leaving you with ice cold water.

A great way to get some sleep on an airplane is by bringing an eye mask. Even when you close your eyes, you can still see the different colors and shapes in front of you. With an eye mask, that will allow it to be completely blacked out, allowing much better chance of sleep.

If you are going on extended vacation and leaving your home behind for a month, it might be worth it to you to stop cable fees and other utilities. Make sure to inform other services you subscribe to, such as pool cleaning or housekeeping while you’re away. Doing all of these things, ensure that you will have a worry-free vacation.

In you’re on a cruise and you start to experience seasickness, have the room service bring you some green apples and crackers. Both of these are great for soothing your stomach and can sometime be better than medications. And they’re also tasty and won’t leave you with a foul taste in your mouth like some seasickness meds.

Talk to your bellman. The man who helps carry your bags to your room is usually one of the most informed people in the hotel. He can tell you the best and worst places to eat, drink, and be merry or relax. Tipping him can bring you a wealth of information, so don’t be stingy!

Avoid locking yourself into a rigid schedule when traveling with the kids to a theme park vacation. Keep in mind that the real point is to have fun not endure a marathon as you race from one ride or attraction to the next. Go over the itinerary with the kids the week before the trip and let each pick one or two specific activities they really want to do. Focus your day on making those dreams come true and integrate other activities as time allows. A mid-day break with a return to your hotel for rest and a swim in the pool can provide an opportunity for some enjoyable family downtime.

Bring postcards from home to show off or trade. Striking up a conversation is much easier if you can whip out a postcard and tell someone this is where you are from. You can also trade these with street vendors for local postcards or other merchandise, especially if you are from a well-known or beautiful city.

If taking a plane trip, bring snacks. Fresh snacks can include apples, strawberries or grapes, and will provide a welcome change from the airplane meals that weigh you down. This will save you the money otherwise spent on expensive airport food.

Stay up as late as possible, or at least until around 8 o’clock in the evening, to help adapt to the time change. Try to stay awake until the right time, even if you feel tired from jet lag. If you sleep too early, you may end up feeling jet lagged for longer. The sooner you adjust to your local time, the sooner your jet lag will leave you.

Creature comforts can make the difference when you are traveling. Bringing your preferred brand of tea or coffee can help with relaxation and help you decompress. Detergents, shampoos and soaps can also be of benefit to avoid using products that will leave you wishing for the feel of home.

Travel can be for relaxation, rejuvenation, adventure or just pure escapism. Whatever your reasons for traveling may be, use the helpful tips outlined in the article to make your journey as stress-free as possible. That way you can sit back, relax, and enjoy the ride — just always remember to buckle your seat belt.
