What is football to you? Is it a game that you play with family and friends? Are you glued to the couch on fall Sundays? Are you a high school player who dreams of making the NFL draft? No matter what, reading these tips can help you learn more about football.
One of the best things you can do as a football player is to listen to your coach. While you may not agree with what your coach has to say, they are in charge of directing the team, not just you as an individual. Without the coach, there would be 11 guys running around in circles on the field.
If you want to be a good football player, then you need to constantly work on your agility. Great agility exercises that you can use for regular workouts include jumping rope, jumping over cones and running through tires. If you can, set up yourself a course for each activity for regular use.
If you want to be a quarterback, or just be better at playing the position, the one thing you need to work on more than anything is passing. Even when you don’t have access to a field, step outside with a friend and aim to throw past them so they have to run and catch it. If you don’t have someone to practice with, throw at a stationary target.
Try to focus some of your exercises on increasing speed. Do jumping squats to increase the speed of your reflex muscles. Squat down and jump on a step. Stand straight up and then jump back down and into a squat. Repeat this exercise 40 times daily and gradually increase the height of the step.
Do at least one basic drill specific to your position on a daily basis. Running backs are wise to work on ball handling drills every day. Quarterbacks should spend at least an hour a day working on throwing accuracy and arm strengthening. Linebackers need to constantly work on their tackling, as well as shedding blockers.
Increase your speed. A good football player needs to be quick on his feet, not only in sprints, but in reaction time and reflexes too. Try adding in some track exercises into your workout regimen and before you know it you will be leaving your opponents behind in the dust.
Try to get a score when you have the rare chance to do so with a fair-catch kick. The fair catch kick is rarely used because the offensive coach would rather give his team the opportunity to get closer to the goal or make a touchdown. A holder positions the ball while a player kicks the football from the ground. It is the same as a regular field goal and is worth three points. This down isn’t timed.
Football training takes a toll on your body if you do not have a consistent recovery plan. This does not mean taking time off from training during the off-season periods. It means allowing your body to recuperate every night and on days off. Get at least eight hours of sleep every night, drink plenty of water (not sodas) and soak in epsom salts three times a week.
Never take the field without a helmet. Each season, your helmet should be inspected thoroughly. The plastic shell should not have any cracks in it and the padding must be in good condition. It should also have a face mask that properly attaches to the helmet and a chin strap that fastens securely. All this is to be sure to prevent head injuries during play.
Flexibility is just as important to a football player as body mass and speed. Don’t limit stretching to the few minutes prior to practice or games. Instead, make stretching an integral part of everyday activities. Focus on your back, hamstrings, glutes and hips. Even if you only have five minutes, take advantage of them.
It helps to be large in football, but not fat. Fat will only harm you as you get older, especially once you slow down your exercise habits. Try to build muscle instead, and minimize your body fat.
Build up both your strength and endurance. Football is a very physical game. If you are not in shape, it will show, and you may have to finish the game from the sideline if you cannot keep up. Establish a safe workout routine that you can do in the off-season to keep on top of your game.
To give you an edge when playing football, it is important to improve your endurance. A good endurance training program should include jogging or long-distance running. You can also improve your endurance by doing interval training. To achieve the desired results, make sure you take the nutrients your body requires by increasing your carbohydrate and protein intake.
When running with the football, you should maintain a good grip consisting of contact at three points with the ball. Hold the front of the ball using your palm or fingers. The outer side of the ball should be squeezed with your forearm. Press the inside panel of the ball against your ribs and abdomen.
Don’t do any exercises until you know exactly how they are done properly. You can learn from your coach or from a trainer at a gym, but be sure to have them watch you do a few reps so that you are sure you are doing it right when you go all-in.
It is important to pick yourself back up after a crushing loss. Instead of feeling guilty for a bad game, learn from your mistakes and try your best at the next game. Talk with your teammates to find out what worked and what didn’t work and apply what you learn to your workout routine.
Whether you play for fun or dream of something bigger, football is a passion you have which shouldn’t be forgotten. By reading about football and learning more, your game play is sure to improve. Keep learning and practicing to get better.
